"The world says, 'Gain power!'...

"...Christ says, 'Love one another.'

Our Pastor

My name is Cindy Maddox, and I am Pastor of King Street United Church of Christ. The children call me Pastor Cindy, but everybody else just calls me Cindy.

I have no way of knowing what brought you to our website today. Maybe you are new to the area and are looking for a church. Maybe you saw a United Church of Christ TV commercial and want to know more. Maybe church has always been a part of your life, or maybe you've been hurt by a church and have walked away. Please know this: no matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here.

A Place of Belonging. Since I don't know who you are, let me tell you about myself. I don't have all the answers. In fact, I have more questions than answers -- and I like it that way. I believe in the power of doubt to fuel our faith. I believe that if worship doesn't include the everyday aspects of our lives, then our everyday lives won't include worship. I believe that we can encounter God anywhere, but nowhere more than in a community of other believers and doubters, seekers and skeptics. And that's who we are at King Street United Church of Christ.

I know how it feels to yearn for a place of belonging. I know what it means to feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. I also know the joy of finding a faith community where I  belong.  I know it can be scary to  try someplace new.

The Rev. Cindy Maddox, a former book editor, is known for her dynamic preaching and sensitive leadership.

Maybe your last church was so wonderful, you're afraid nothing else will measure up. Or maybe church has left you hurt and disappointed before. All I ask is that you give us a chance to prove -- as our home page claims -- that King Street is different, and different is good.

Celebrating Our Differences. Here in this church you will find a wide range of people, personalities, experiences, and perspectives. Some of us have been members of this church for sixty years, and others have come recently after ten years without a spiritual community. We don't all agree, and we don't force others to agree, either. But we stick together, and in our differences we encourage one another to become who we were created to be -- fully human, fully engaged, fully alive, and bearing the image of God.

If you have questions about King Street UCC, feel free to call or e-mail me. If you want to come to church but are nervous, let me know when you're coming and I'll have somebody meet you at the door and sit with you. Or you can sneak in the back and be anonymous. Just don't expect to be invisible for long.

I invite you to spend a little time on our website. See the pictures of the fun we have together. Check out a couple of my sermons. Read about our many ministries and programs, especially our outreach and service to the community. Then come worship with us some Sunday morning and meet us for real. You are welcome here. Really. We mean it.

Excerpted from Maddox's sermon on King Street Church's 175th anniversary, August 21, 2005.
