Outreach The mission of the Outreach
Team is
to enable the church to express its love and concern for people in
need. We provide both financial and hands-on opportunities to serve
locally and around the world:
-
Housatonic
Habitat for Humanity. Our church participates in work days and
contributes financially to this worldwide charity, which helps
people build affordable housing.
-
Dorothy Day Hospitality House. The fourth Saturday of
every month is King Street Church's day at this cooperative facility in
downtown Danbury. Seven or more adults and young
people from our congregation prepare and serve a hot meal to approximately 70 people
in need.
- Daily Bread Food Pantry and AIDS Food
Pantry. We regularly donate food to these Danbury charities.
- AIDS Adopt a Family program. We
participate in this program at Christmas time.
-
Salvation Army. Every Christmas we decorate a tree with
angels, each bearing a child's wish that any member may choose to
fulfill.
- American
Red Cross. We stage
an annual blood drive at the church.
- Food Baskets. In our annual Scavenger
Hunt, our youth group and Scout troops collect hundreds of pounds
of boxed and canned goods that the congregation delivers with
turkeys and other perishables to families for Thanksgiving.
-
UCC Child Sponsorship Program. Our church sponsors four
children, three from Tibet and one from the Philippines. Members of
our Sunday School send the children holiday packages. We regularly
receive letters from both children, detailing their progress in
school.
- Annual Offerings. We participate in
Our Church’s Wider Mission,
Harvest Sharing, One Great Hour
of Sharing, the Christmas Fund, Neighbors In Need, and the
Church World Service Blanket Sunday.
- Hanahoe Clinic. We provide financial
support to this clinic for needy children, based in downtown
Danbury.
-
ShareFest. We plan to participate in the 2007 ShareFest of
Greater Danbury. A cooperative project of many Christian churches
in our area, ShareFest is a spring weekend of “hands on” work
projects, as well as food, clothing, and blood drives, culminating
in a Sunday evening Community Celebration Service. (Click
here to read about the 2006 ShareFest.)
-
WestConn Ministry. We support this program's activities on
the Danbury campuses of Western Connecticut State University.
-
Thrift Shop.
Located in the church basement, this store sells an amazing variety
of used clothing and household gear to budget-conscious families
throughout the region. It is run by our Women's Society, which
donates part of the proceeds to local and global missions.
