Deacons

The deacons play a vital role in worship, member care, and member growth.

Worship

  • Recruit members and friends to serve as liturgists and ushers.

  • Arrange to fill the pulpit when the pastor is away.

  • Serve Holy Communion.

  • Help to prepare special services.

Member Care

  • Help the pastor provide regular visitation and Holy Communion to the homebound and sick.

  • Sustain a congregational prayer chain.

  • Encourage participation in retreats, Bible studies, and other spiritually enriching activities.

Member Growth

  • Greet visitors and help them make an informed choice on becoming a member.

  • Help with “inquirers' gatherings” for newcomers.

  • Assist the pastor in a year-long confirmation program for eighth-graders.

  • Help the Hospitality Committee host church receptions.

Special Needs

  • Organize and administer our Broad Shoulders program, which provides meals and assistance to members and friends in temporary need.

  • Oversee the One Family Fund, which helps members who are experiencing financial difficulty.

  • Manage the Deacons Plate Fund, which helps people outside our church.
