About King Street Church

Founded in 1830 by eight members of Danbury's farming community (see history), King Street Church still worships in the white clapboard sanctuary with the five-pointed steeple that the founders erected in 1846 at the corner of King and South King streets.

From the beginning, members promised not only to "watch over and care for one another," but also to serve the world beyond their tight-knit community. Today we belong to the United Church of Christ (UCC), a mainline denomination committed to both spiritual enrichment and social justice.

One of UCC's founding principles is that Christians needn't always agree in order to share in the body of Christ. Our church family comes from a rich variety of political, ethnic, and religious traditions.

Besides participating in our own denomination, we are active in interfaith activities in the Danbury area. Indeed, some of our outreach activities span the globe.

For many years, life at King Street Church has been guided by this promise:

The cross above our altar was cast 50 years ago by Seth Wibling, who died in 1965. His wife, Mildred, was our oldest member at her death in 2007. Seth's parents, Gerde and Helge Wibling, settled here after coming to this country from Sweden. The cross was donated in their memory.

Our Covenant

We unite together through our faith and trust in God, revealed in Jesus Christ, who lives in us through the Holy Spirit.

We welcome into this church family all who seek fellowship with God, and we promise to watch over and care for one another.

We seek the guidance of God's Holy Spirit in worship, in celebration of the sacraments and in all our life together.

We challenge one another to grow in faith, knowledge, and commitment, using the Bible to guide our journey.

We promise to give willingly of ourselves so that this truly becomes a servant church, joyously sharing God's gift of love, spreading the Good News, and reflecting the light of Christ in our daily lives.

As we have been blessed, may we be a blessing to others.
