About the United Church of
Christ
|
The United Church of Christ (UCC),
to which our church belongs, began in 1957 as a union of several Christian
traditions. It traces its roots to the Congregationalist,
Christian,
Evangelical, and Reformed movements of the 18th and 19th
centuries -- and before that, to the Pilgrims. Besides
spiritual growth, it is committed to
social justice.
The UCC and its forbears were the first to ordain blacks,
gays, and women, and have played key roles in the abolitionist
and civil-rights movements of the 19th, 20th, and 21st
centuries.
From the beginning, UCC affirmed that
Christians do not always have to agree in order to
live in communion. UCC's motto, "that they may all be one" (John
17:20) is Jesus' prayer for the unity of the church. |

Although one branch of our
history dates to the Pilgrims, we are among the most
future-oriented churches in America.

As a consequence of
its inclusive philosophy, UCC is today one of the most diverse
Christian churches in America, spanning the political, social,
racial, economic, and spiritual spectrums. Headquartered in Cleveland
Ohio, it comprises 1.4 million members, with congregations in
nearly every state.
